Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in Qld

Australia's electricity market has been undergoing a deregulation which began in the late 1990s. The first step of deregulation was the establishing of a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered in another state.

Another stage, which happened sooner in some states, was the breaking up of state owned electricity monopolies into competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to stimulate better competition the market was separated into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors have the responsibility for the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises , and they own and maintain the poles and powerlines, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers Retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and issue bills. States have from 1 to 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

On 1 July 2016 , South East Queensland 's electricity market was completely deregulated. This meant that customers could, for the first time, switch to another provider that had cheaper prices.

There are only two distributors supplying electricity to Queensland

  • Energex
The Energex network supplies electricity to homes and businesses in a region covering around 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, that stretches from the border of NSW to Gympie in the north. This covers the major population areas of the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Ipswich, Brisbane, Redlands, Logan and Moreton Bay.
  • Ergon Energy
Ergon Energy supplies electricity to Queensland including rural areas and coastal and remote communities in outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.

Tips for reducing your electricity consumption to save money

Here are a few easily implemented ways to reduce your electricity consumption

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Reduce use of your clothes dryer. Dry clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Eliminate draughts. Minimise hot or cold air blowing in or leaving through gaps under doors and around your windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Turn all your appliances off at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, wear clothing that's appropriate for cold weather (beanie, jumper, booties, warm socks).
  • Close the doors of rooms that you aren't using, so you only have to cool or heat a smaller area.
  • Reduce your use of lights. Use natural lighting where possible.
  • Minimise air conditioning usage by opening your windows at night-time to allow the cooler air in, and then closing them each morning to keep hot air out.
  • Stop the hot sun over-heating rooms by closing the blinds and curtains in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens after you have completed the comparison process and you have made the decision to change electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new electricity provider will allow you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means that you have ten days to cancel the process and go back to your current energy provider.
No. You won't have to do that. The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). This distributor continues to supply electricity to your premises when you switch over to another energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity bills, but they buy the energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from your distributor, you must go through an energy retailer. You can be sure that your electricity supply won't be interrupted when you switch retailers, because you will continue to have the same connection to your distributor.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually within 24 hours. However, the final switchover won't happen until your old provider has sent your final bill, and that can't be done until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on when your next meter reading takes place. It be up to three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and we will also tell your present provider that you are leaving them. The transfer to the new provider won't happen straight away, because your current provider will have to do a final meter reading. and then issue you a final bill. Your new provider only starts charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor who feeds the energy to your home continues to be the same as it was before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. We will be paid a commission by the new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
