The Australian electricity market has been undergoing a deregulation process which began in the late 1990s. The first step was to establish a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to customers in a different state.
The next step, which happened sooner in some states, was the dividing up of state owned monopolies into several competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to produce a greater degree of competition the market was separated into two levels
- Energy Distributors
Distributors have the responsibility for the delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and maintain the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers. - Energy Retailers The retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and issue bills. Each state has between one and three distributors but up to thirty retailers.
On 1 July 2013 , the South Australia electricity market was fully deregulated. This meant that customers could switch to a provider who had cheaper electricity prices.
Electricity in SA is supplied by one main distributor
- SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks distributes electricity throughout South Australia - Note, electricity in a some remote areas of SA is distributed by other companies.
Tips to lower electricity consumption and lower your bills
Here are a few easily implemented tips to reduce household expenditure on electricity
- Instead of turning on the heater, wear warmer clothing (jumper, beanie, warm socks, booties).
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Turn all your appliances off at the power point when they're not in use.
- Avoid use of the clothes dryer. Instead, dry your clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
- Eliminate draughts. Prevent hot or cold air entering or escaping through gaps under doors and around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
- Stop the hot sun over-heating your house by closing blinds and curtains in the rooms where the sun shines in.
- Close the doors to areas of the house that you don't use, so that you just heat or cool a smaller area.
- Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening your windows in the evening let the cooler air in, and then closing them in the morning to keep the hot air out.
- Use less lighting. Use natural light more often. Turn the lights off when you leave the room.
