Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in NSW

The Australian electricity market has been undergoing a process of deregulation which began in the late 1990s. The first stage of deregulation involved establishing a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold in a different state.

Another stage, which occurred sooner in some states, was the dividing up of the state owned electricity monopolies into multiple competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to produce a greater amount of competition the energy market was divided into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors manage the delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and manage the poles and powerlines, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and manage the billing. The states have from one to three distributors but up to 30 retailers.

On 1 July 2014 , the NSW market was fully deregulated. This enabled consumers to change to a provider that had cheaper electricity prices.

Electricity in NSW is supplied by three distributors

  • Endeavour Energy
The Endeavour Energy network provides 2.4 million people with electricity in homes and businesses in the Blue Mountains, Sydney's Greater West and the Southern Highlands.
  • Ausgrid
Ausgrid's network distributes electricity throughout northern, eastern and inner metropolitan Sydney and in Newcastle and the Hunter region.
  • Essential Energy
Essential Energy supplies electricity regional and country NSW, as well as in southern regional QLD.

Tips to reduce your electricity consumption and lower your bills

Here are some easily implemented tips for reducing how much electricity you use

  • Minimise draughts. Prevent cold air or hot air entering or escaping via gaps under doors and around windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Use your clothes dryer less often. Instead, dry the clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Dress for cold weather, instead of turning on the heater (jumper, booties, warm socks, beanie).
  • Turn your appliances off at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Stop the sun over-heating your house by closing the curtains and blinds in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
  • Close doors to areas of your home that you aren't using, so you just heat or cool a smaller area.
  • Reduce the use of lights by using natural light where possible.
  • Minimise air conditioning usage by opening windows at night to allow the cooler air in, then shutting them in the morning thus keeping the hot air out.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some answers to questions about what happens after you've completed the comparison process and you have made the decision that you'd like to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay, your new electricity provider must give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days during which you can cancel the process and stay with your current energy provider.
No. You won't need to do any of that. The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). The distributor continues to supply the electricity to your premises if you change to a different energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity bills, but they buy the energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from the distributor, you have to go through an energy retailer. You can be confident that your electricity supply will not be interrupted when you switch retailers, because you will continue to have the same connection to your distributor.
The 'paperwork' is all processed very quickly, usually in less than 24 hours. However, the final switchover can't take place until after your present provider has sent you your final bill, and that can't happen until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on how long until your next meter reading. It be up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we'll also inform your present provider of your move away from them. The change to your new provider will not happen straight away, though, because your current provider has to do a meter reading again, one final time. and then send you a final bill. The new provider begins charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor who supplies the energy to your home continues to be the same as it was before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. Instead, we will be paid a commission by your new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
